CREATING SPACE, CONNECTING THE DOTS

I’m Dom, 35, born and raised in Mainz, a small city in southwest Germany. The youngest of five, I was always curious about what lay beyond the familiar. My family was traditional and Catholic, focused on structure, but I felt drawn to adventure, to what’s new and unknown. Growing up in the ‘90s meant PlayStation, mixed CDs, and breaking patterns. I never wanted a 9-to-5 life; I wanted to follow my curiosity.

That curiosity took me to India, New Zealand, places that opened my world. Back in Germany, it became Vinokilo, a small vintage event that started in a friend’s living room with clothes, a DJ, coffee, and tattoos. Four hundred people came. Then eight hundred. Then a thousand. Soon we were touring Europe: The Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Portugal. I did that for seven years with a lot of happiness. But after a while, I was longing for less movement and more meaning and connection again.

After Vinokilo, I took a campervan trip and met someone who owned a Volkswagen platform and was building tiny houses. That sparked a new project with a friend: renting old Volkswagen T3s while living in Peniche, finally by the ocean, surfing and learning restoring cars. In that time I came to a new idea: what if I brought together all the inspiring people I’d met?

That became Dom’s Table, a space to move, talk, surf and reflect. My friend led movement sessions, others held circles and conversations that went deep. I hosted retreats in Morocco and Spain, full of surf, reflection and honest talks. It wasn’t always easy, but it was real. Eventually, I paused it, not as an ending, but to release pressure for myself. Because that’s how I live: following my gut and intuition.

Do you have a motto or tagline that sums up your work or creative vision?

Creating space, connecting the dots. I follow my curiosity. I’m proud of how I tune in. I am with my gut feeling, open to emotions and experiences. Every moment, even a breakup or a setback, has something to teach me, if you’re willing to feel it.

How would you describe yourself?

When I was younger I studied business management and worked in that field for a while. These days, it’s harder to define what I do in one word. I still do some brand creation and development, but whether it’s DJ’ing, the podcast, or Dom’s Table, at the core, it’s always about holding space and creating space. That’s why “Creative Curator” feels right to me at this point.

What set you on the path to becoming a DJ, podcaster, and creative developer?

It all unfolded naturally. About five years ago, someone told me I had a nice voice and asked me to read them a bedtime story. I picked up the book Let Me Tell You a Story by Jorge Bucay and from that moment on I started my podcast ideas.

Around the same time, I started DJ’ing. Friends gave me space to practice, and one night in France I played for about 200 people, my first real set. Seeing all those smiling faces and feeling that shared energy, I realized what truly drives me: creating connection, whether through sound, words, or shared moments.

Who or what inspires you?

My friends. My environment. I’m surrounded by people who create, follow their heart, and live authentically. That inspires me more than anything.

What’s your most essential tool?

My dog, Tudo, he keeps me grounded. And my headphones. I always listen to music, everyday. If I had to pick a song for this year it would be Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place. It feels that I am at the right place.

How do you know when something is truly good?

When it creates space, space for people to meet, to share, to connect. That’s the common thread in everything I do. And of course when I see that people genuinely enjoy it.

Is there a connection between your personal and commercial projects?

I try to bring my full self into both worlds. Over time, I’ve learned they don’t need to be separate, what matters is staying true to who you are in each.

The 5 questions

1. When do you feel completely in your element?

Playing music, when I am in the water (surfing), or when I can bring all my creative ideas to life.

2. A documentary everyone should watch?

Searching for Sugar Man.

3. Someone whose work inspires you?

My friends Doyel & Neil (IG: howareyoufeeling.studio.)

4. What has your passion/work done for you personally?

It opened up my awareness and helped me grow as a person. It naturally brought me to places like Portugal and beyond, where I met different people. It broadened my whole perspective.

5. A place to go to relax, escape, or find inspiration in your city?

Café Baía do Sul, the yellow café at Praia do Sul with the Lipton chairs. I sit there, eyes on the horizon, sipping a good Portuguese coffee, surrounded by mostly Portuguese people.
